Five Words Share a Secret
Read the puzzle
Six word tiles sit in three rows of two: CANINE and OFTEN on top, THREAD and ATONE in the middle, NETWORK and LONELY at the bottom. The video adds: look closely, every word is hiding something. Five of these words share a hidden secret. Which word does not?
Five of these words share a secret. Which one does not?
Look for words inside the words.
THREAD
The others hide ONE, NINE, ONE, TWO and TEN. THREAD only looks like it hides THREE.
How to solve it
Look for a shorter word sitting inside each longer one, using letters that run in a row. Here the hidden words are all numbers.
CANINE ends in N, I, N, E, which is NINE. OFTEN ends in T, E, N, which is TEN. ATONE holds O, N, E. NETWORK holds T, W, O in its middle. LONELY starts L, then O, N, E, so it hides ONE as well. That is five words with a number tucked inside.
Now check THREAD. It starts T, H, R, E, which looks like the start of THREE, but the next letter is A, not a second E. No other number fits either, so THREAD is the odd one out.
The trap is that THREAD looks like the strongest candidate for hiding a number, because THREE jumps out at a glance. Solvers who read quickly tick it off and then hunt for a problem in one of the others, often picking NETWORK or LONELY because their numbers are less obvious.
Quick check: spell each hidden number letter by letter against the tile. A hidden word only counts if every letter is there, in order, with nothing missing.
