Follow the Arrows
Read the puzzle
Each tile in this 5 by 5 grid says where to jump: U, D, L or R, plus 1 or 2 tiles. Row 1: M D1, S D1, E R1, N (ring: stop), D L2. Row 2: G (star, start) R2, M D1, A R2, O L2, R U1. Row 3: G U2, O U2, N D2, G U1, L U2. Row 4: L U1, O U1, D U2, L U1, O L2. Row 5: A U2, A U1, G R2, R U2, L L2. Which word do you spell?
Start at the star. Which word do you spell?
GARDEN
Jump 1 or 2 tiles as the dots say; stop at the ring.
How to solve it
Follow the instructions on each tile: the arrow gives the direction and the number of dots gives how many tiles to jump.
Start on G with the star, in row 2, column 1. Its arrow points right with two dots, so jump two tiles to A. A also says right two, landing on R at the end of row 2. R says up one, reaching D in the top-right corner. D says left two, landing on E in row 1, column 3. E says right one, which lands on the ringed N, where you stop.
The letters visited are G, A, R, D, E, N, which spell GARDEN.
The usual mistake is moving only one tile at a time, which from G lands on M and sends the path down into the lower rows, far from the ring. Quick check: the path must end exactly on the ring, and this one does after five jumps, using six letters.
