From the Field
I grow in the field. Drop my first letter and I warm your home. Drop one more and it is what you do at every meal. What am I?

No peeking until the ring closes.
Think of a crop.
WHEAT
WHEAT loses its W to become HEAT, then its H to become EAT.
How to solve it
Work through the clues in order and test each crop word. It must lose its first letter and still be a word linked to warmth, then lose one more letter and be what you do at a meal.
WHEAT grows in fields. Drop the W and you get HEAT, which warms a home. Drop the H and you get EAT, what you do at every meal.
The common slip is CORN or OATS: dropping a letter gives ORN or ATS, which fail at once.
Quick check: W-H-E-A-T, H-E-A-T, E-A-T.
